The Magic of a Full-Service Wedding Florist—and Why You’ll Love the Difference

When you start searching for wedding flowers, it’s easy to assume that all florists work more or less the same way. They design the flowers, deliver them, and you enjoy them. Simple enough, right?

Not quite.

There’s actually a significant difference between a full-service wedding florist and what many in the industry call a “drop-and-go” vendor—and that difference has a direct impact on how your wedding day unfolds. Understanding it before you book could save you a lot of stress.

Here’s what you need to know.

What a Drop-and-Go Florist Does

A drop-and-go florist (sometimes called a delivery-only florist) does exactly what the name suggests. They design your wedding flowers, deliver them to your venue, and leave. Once the flowers are dropped off, their job is done.

For some couples, this works just fine—especially for smaller, more casual celebrations where the setup is minimal and the couple or their planner can handle placement.

But for most weddings? This model creates a gap that’s easy to overlook when you’re booking and painfully obvious on the day of.

Here’s why: wedding flowers aren’t just delivered and forgotten. They need to be placed. Arches need to be installed. Ceremony arrangements often need to move to the reception space after the ceremony ends. Centerpieces need to be arranged exactly as discussed. And at the end of the night, someone needs to handle the breakdown and pickup—or you’re leaving that to an already-exhausted wedding party.

When a florist drops off and leaves, all of that falls on someone else.

What a Full-Service Wedding Florist Actually Does

A full-service wedding florist is involved from the first conversation to the final bloom of the evening. The scope of work is entirely different.

At Weddings by Strelitzia, our process includes seven distinct steps—and most of them happen before we ever arrive at your venue.

Here’s what happens behind the scenes before your wedding day:

  • Consultation — We sit down (or hop on a Zoom) to learn your vision, your venue, your vibe, and your priorities.
  • Custom Proposal — Every wedding gets a proposal built specifically for that couple. No templates. No copy-paste designs.
  • Wholesale Ordering — We source your flowers through directly through our professional wholesale growers, not grocery store coolers. Premium blooms, ordered in the right quantities for your specific event.
  • Processing & Conditioning — When flowers arrive at our shop, they’re checked, trimmed, and hydrated. Then they’re allowed to open naturally before being moved to the cooler to harden. This step alone makes a measurable difference in how your flowers look and last on the day of.
  • Design — A full-service wedding often takes multiple designers several days to complete. Each arrangement is built with intention, not assembled in a rush.
  • Installation & Onsite Presence — We arrive at your venue, install every piece, and, if needed, stay. When your ceremony ends, we can be there to transfer ceremony arrangements to your reception space—so nothing is wasted and everything looks intentional.
  • End-of-Night Pickup — When the celebration is over, we can also handle breakdown and pickup. You don’t have to think about it.

Note: onsite transfer and end of night pickup are by contract only.

That’s the difference. Seven steps. One team. Start to finish.

Why This Matters for Your Wedding Day

Let’s talk about the moments where this distinction actually shows up.

The ceremony-to-reception transfer. This is one of the most underappreciated logistics of any wedding. The arch that framed your ceremony vows, the aisle arrangements, the statement pieces—those don’t have to disappear after the ceremony. A full-service florist moves them into the reception space so your guests experience them twice, and your investment goes further. A drop-and-go vendor can’t do this because they’re already gone.

The unexpected moments. Weddings don’t always go exactly as planned. A boutonniere gets crushed in the limo. A centerpiece tips. A family member needs a last-minute pinned corsage. When your florist is onsite, those things get handled quietly and quickly. When they’ve already left, they become your problem.

The end of the night. After hours of celebrating, the last thing you want to think about is floral breakdown and cleanup. A full-service florist can take care of it. You go enjoy your send-off.

What Goes Into Premium Wedding Flowers

Beyond the logistics, there’s also the question of quality—and this is where the difference between a full-service wedding florist and a budget-friendly alternative becomes most visible.

At Weddings by Strelitzia, we use premium wholesale flowers for every wedding we design directly from flower growers that we have worked with for years. These are a higher grade than what you’d find at a grocery store or big-box retailer—larger blooms, longer lasting, more consistent in color and quality.

We also hand-select the best stems for the most personal pieces: your bridal bouquet, the boutonnieres, the florals you’ll be holding in every photo. Those pieces get the best of the best, every time.

And because we’ve been doing this for over 50 years, we know what flowers behave well in June heat, what blooms look best in candlelight, and how to build an arrangement that photographs beautifully and holds up through a five-hour reception.

That kind of knowledge isn’t something you can replicate with a quick internet search or a Pinterest board. It comes from decades of experience, thousands of weddings, and a team that genuinely loves what they do.

Is a Full-Service Florist Right for You?

Honestly? Not every wedding requires full-service florals, and we’d rather help you make the right decision than sell you something you don’t need.

That’s why we offer two service tiers:

Signature Strelitzia is our full-service experience. It includes delivery, professional installation, and, when contracted onsite presence, ceremony-to-reception transfers, and end-of-night pickup. This is the right fit for couples who want their wedding flowers to be a true focal point of their day—and who want to hand the logistics completely off to a team they trust.

Simply Strelitzia is a fixed-price, designer’s choice option with no minimum required. You choose your colors and style, we design something beautiful, and you pick it up or we deliver. It doesn’t include onsite setup or takedown, but it’s a great option for smaller or more casual celebrations.

Both options use the same premium flowers. Both are designed with the same care. The difference is in the scope of service—and the peace of mind that comes with having a team in your corner from start to finish.

What to Ask Before You Book Any Florist

Whether you book with us or someone else, here are the questions worth asking before you sign a contract:

  • Will you be onsite during my wedding? Or do you deliver and leave?
  • Do you handle the ceremony-to-reception transfer? Or is that on us?
  • Who handles breakdown and pickup at the end of the night?
  • Where do you source your flowers? Are they premium wholesale blooms?
  • How many designers will work on my wedding? How long does it take?
  • What happens if something goes wrong on the day of?

The answers to those questions will tell you a lot about what you’re actually getting—and help you compare florists on something more meaningful than price alone.

A Final Thought

Your wedding flowers are one of the most photographed, most noticed, and most emotionally resonant parts of your wedding day. They set the tone for your ceremony, fill the background of hundreds of photos, and create the atmosphere your guests walk into.

That’s worth getting right.

At Weddings by Strelitzia, we’ve been helping Northern California couples get it right for over 50 years. From our shop in Davis, we serve couples across Sacramento, Napa, Sonoma, Lake Tahoe, and the Bay Area—and we handle everything, every time, from the first petal to the last.

If you’re still figuring out what you need, we’d love to chat. A quick 15-minute conversation is often all it takes to get clarity on what’s the right fit for your day.
